A ceasefire, starting on Wednesday night, 21 November, has been announced eight days after the Israeli military started to bombard Gaza. While this is a great relief to many, further outbreaks of bloodshed are tragically inevitable until there is an end to the national oppression of the Palestinians and fundamental system change in the interests of all working class people across the region.
Gaza: Stop the Israeli state terror!
The Israeli government has declared that its shocking and brutal assault on the Gaza strip, ‘Operation Pillar of Defence’, will be a “widespread campaign” and threatens “protracted conflict”. Anti-Islam movie: Reaping the grapes of wrath
Protests sparked by an anti-Islam movie trailer made in the US have spilled over more than 20 countries across the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia, countries with important Muslim communities, as well as a few other parts of the world. While a number of these marches - mostly aimed at American embassies and symbols - were peaceful, in several places they turned violent, leaving around a dozen people dead and hundreds injured.
Euro crisis – democracy diminished to facilitate austerity
In scrambling to avoid a break-up of the eurozone, the approach of the elites in Europe has been characterised by two common themes – austerity programmes to make the working class pay, and a further diminishing of democracy to facilitate the implementation of that austerity.
