One year after Savita’s death – real change not delivered
A year has passed since the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar. Last November saw over two thousand people take to the streets of Dublin to express their sorrow as well as their outrage that in 2012 a young woman could effectively be left to suffer and die in pain rather than be granted a termination of pregnancy that could have potentially saved her life.
Invest in water infrastructure, not metering
The government is spending €539 million on construction crews digging up concrete pavements all over the country to install water meters outside every home. At the same time the capital city is suffering crippling water shortages because there hasn’t been enough investment in production plants that could store sufficient treated water to cover periodic problems that inevitably arise such as the current difficulties from the variation in the available water’s chemical properties.
Climate change – just how can it be tackled?
This September, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a highly anticipated report detailing the latest findings on global warming. Drawn from the meticulous, peer-reviewed studies of over 800 leading scientists, the IPCC document refutes claims that climate change is uncertain, in decline, or not caused by human activity.
Russian LGBT & socialist activist speaks out
At a ROSA meeting in October, Igor Iasine as guest speaker spoke about his first hand experience of LGBT repression in Russia, and the CWI’s campaign against this. Igor is active in Moscow, both in the LGBT movement, and in the Socialist Party’s sister organisation, the Russian section of the CWI. In this year, he has been physically attacked twice because of his activities.
No more “slut-shaming” & sexism

Statement by the Socialist Party on water metering & charging
The proposal by the government and Irish Water to install millions of water meters on homes is reactionary and profit-driven and has nothing to do with water conservation. Meters will facilitate the charging of individuals / families for the use of a basic necessity, currently paid for through central taxation.
