Stop the slaughter of peace activists by the Israeli Defence Force

News reports have not yet provided a definitive account of the extent of the IDF attack on the flotilla of eight humanitarian aid ships on their way to Gaza. However it is clear that IDF forces have taken over some of the ships and at least 10 unarmed activists have been slaughtered and others injured. There are at least eleven Irish nationals on this flotilla and we do not yet know the condition they are in.

Thousands march to save Wexford Hospital

Thousands of Wexford people took to the streets of Wexford Town last Saturday to protest at the cutting of services at Wexford General Hospital.

The protest march is part of an on going campaign by health workers, local groups and patients who are angry at attempts to downgrade services at Wexford General Hospital or at some stage to reduce the number of hours the accident and emergency unit is open there - it is currently a 24 hour service.

Human rights report exposes Garda role in repression of Shell to Sea campaigners

A report published by non-governmental foundation, Front Line, examining human rights in respect of the Corrib Gas dispute, raises serious issues regarding the policing of the project and in relation to the project itself. Front Line is an international foundation established in Ireland in 2001, concerned with the rights of those who can be considered human rights defenders. The report finds that according to the United Nations definition, those involved in peaceful dispute against Shell may be categorised as human rights defenders.

Peter Hadden, leading Socialist Party member, dies

It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Peter Hadden died at his home in Belfast yesterday (May 5th) after a courageous battle against cancer. Peter played an enormous role in the workers' movement in Ireland and internationally, and will be remembered with great fondness and admiration by the thousands of workers he struggled alongside.
