Household Tax is Highway Robbery

Minister Phil Hogan visited Limerick last Friday, and was confronted by a masked robber who exclaimed: "Stand and Deliver: Household Tax, Highway Robbery!" The protest, organised by the Limerick branch of the Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes got great media coverage locally and nationally, and ensured Hogan's didn't go unchallenged on his trip to Limerick.

The crew of the MV Saoirse and the Tahrir remain in custody in Givon Prison. Reports have emerged of violence used when the ship was hijacked by the Israeli Navy, and from a telephone conversation with Paul we have learned that the crew have been severely mistreated in prison ( see here )

The killing of Toyosi Shitta-bey in Tyrellstown in West Dublin on Good Friday is a huge tragedy for his family, friends and the whole community and has outraged many throughout the country. That such a young life, with immense talent, could be so brutally ended has left many in shock.

It is vital that working class people from all backgrounds unite and send out a very strong message that such senseless and violent attacks have no place in our community and will not be tolerated. The whole community must also ensure that the investigation into Toyosi’s death is vigorous and pursued to the very end.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, a Russian political activist and member of the punk group Pussy Riot, was jailed in August 2012 for hooliganism and blasphemy. Her crime was to stage an anti-Putin protest, along with two other performers, inside Moscow's Orthodox Cathedral. Despite claims that Russia has made steps towards becoming a more open society, those in power took immediate steps to silence the band’s radical feminist message.
