Rejuvenation application for Tallaght Town Centre: a pre election gimmick.

Councillor Mick Murphy opposed a motion to apply for “rejuvenation status” for Tallaght Town Centre at Mondays Tallaght Area Committee meeting and slammed the move as an attempt to distract from the disaster that is Tallaght Town Centre in the run in to Local Elections.

“In July 2006 every other Councillor on SDCC voted to continue the rate of 2,800 apartments to be built every six years in the square mile in the middle of Tallaght. Now over half of the apartments are empty and the Councillors are trying to make it look like they have a plan to do something about it” Cllr Murphy said.

“Apart from the obvious contradiction of applying for something to be “rejuvinated” before it is even built, this status even if granted, which is highly un-likely, will only have a small bearing on the apartments that are occupied and no bearing on the un-occupied apartments” Cllr Murphy said.

“The fact is that many of the un-occupied apartments will become the property of the state via NAMA the National Asset Management Agency and when that happens South Dublin County Council should be in there and take them over” Cllr Murphy said.

“Some of them should be rented out as social housing or sold of for a price much more in the bracket of what people on an average wage can pay. For instance an interest free mortgage of €100 per week over 20 years equates to €104,000. That is around what it cost to build these apartments and is more than enough to pay for them” Cllr Murphy said.

US – A graphic picture of decline

New book charts economic, social and political decay of America

“No one can say when the unwinding began – when the coil that held Americans together in its secure and  sometimes stifling grip first gave way. Like any great change, the unwinding began at countless times, in  countless ways – and at some moment the country, always the same country, crossed a line of history and  became irretrievably different”.

So begins George Packer in this tremendous book, The Unwinding, which paints a devastating picture of US  capitalism in decline. Similar to Packer, Karl Marx described the collapse of the Spanish Empire as a “slow and  inglorious decay”. The difference is that Spain’s decline took place over centuries, whereas the astonishing  collapse of the US – still, nevertheless, the strongest capitalist power on the planet – has been compressed  into 50 or 60 years!

The Musical Legacy of Gil Scott-Heron

Last month revolutionary and renowned soul, jazz and blues artist, Gil Scott Heron, sadly passed away. Most famous for his song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", Gil had a long and turbulant artistic career and life, and is seen as a key musical influence on the development of R&B and rap. His songs were not just mundane songs about nothing, but were scathing social commentary on capitalism and capitalist society. Here we post a review, written by members of Socialist Alternative, our American sister party.

To stop cuts and bailouts ICTU must take real action

In the September issue of the Union Post David Begg, ICTU general secretary and Jack O’Connor, ICTU president, argued against the government’s current economic policies. However, one thing was starkly missing from both of their statements - in fact it was missing from the whole newspaper – there was no mention of a strategy to defeat the government’s attacks on working people.
